Before the sophomore sensation quarterback at Mizzou even makes a start at the college level, all eyes of the nation are on James Franklin - and the shoe's that he has to fill - this season's top ten draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Blaine Gabbert.
The starting quarterback position in Columbia isn't exactly the easiest spot to enter - the position for the Tigers has always played a huge role in the teams success - and the last three (Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, and Blaine Gabbert) have all left Mizzou to go on to play on Sunday's - so as you can see, there is quite a bit of pressure on the academic and atheltic stand out.
Franklin, who is 6'2 and stands in at 225 pounds, isn't known for being much of a scrambler, but does indeed have a cannon for an arm. He was a four star recruit out of the state of Texas in high school and has been on the team's head coach Gary Pinkel's radar since he was an underclassmen in high school.
A lot of the critics like to believe that the success of this programs quarterbacks have a lot to do with the spread offensive attack that they run - and while that may be the case, indeed, every quarterback they have had has thrived under it - so why can't Franklin?
Missouri has a lot of athletic standouts on this offense, so a big season is definently possible. The potential for him to be good there - as well as the potential to be great - and if there is one coach and coaching staff that can do that to a kid with the athletic ability of Franklin, coach Pinkel and staff are one of the top suitors out there in the country.
They helped turn two little known high school players from Texas in Danario Alexander and Michael Egnew into All-Americans over the last two seasons.
Who's to say that they can't do the same thing with Franklin?
I'm not going to say that this kid will be better than any of Mizzou's past three QB's, but he most certaintly could be even better. The kid has raw talent and a lot of explosion around him with the Missouri Tigers. As they all say, time will tell all tales.
